Safety Specialist - Occupational Health and Safety/Industrial Hygiene

Ideal candidate will have a traditional safety background, with an emphasis on occupational health and safety or industrial hygiene.
Position supports and will travel all Houston Area Locations with the main office being housed at the main campus.
Recognize, Evaluate, and Mitigate Hazards Conducts inspections in accordance with applicable standards and regulatory requirements. Conducts ZIP rounds semi-annually and tracers at all HAL locations. Conducts annual lab inspections. Maintains all necessary inspection documentation and follows-up on corrective actions. Conducts safety risk assessments as needed. Conducts quarterly dock inspections and annual shop inspections. Conducts quality checks on vendor-inspected eye washes and safety showers.
Compliance Develops, reviews and maintains policies, procedures and plan to support Joint Commission accreditation and CMS requirements. Participates in all accreditation surveys and mock surveys as needed.
Program Support and Implementation Conducts and assists Prinicipal Safety Specialist with the following tasks to support various EH&S programs:
a. Fire and Life Safety support: Act as a liaison with fire safety equipment inspections and maintenance. Conduct life safety walkthroughs as needed. Coordinate Interim Life Safety Measures with Construction Safety as needed. Participate in construction plan reviews for new construction or existing construction renovations.
b. Occupational Health and Safety support: Conduct all required sampling such as Pharmacy sampling, air sampling, mold sampling, lead sampling and exposure monitoring. Assist with accident investigations and ergonomic assessments. Assist with fit testing for staff.
c. Lab Safety support: Conduct safety seals as needed. Act as liaison for hood maintenance.
d. Environmental Protection support: Assist with hazardous waste pick-ups. Conduct CSRx container changeouts. Serve as liaison for medical and confidential waste pick-ups documentation and training. Participate in spill response as needed.
e. Emergency Planning support: Participate in all emergency and fire drills. Work with EM teams on plans and hazard vulnerability analysis (HVAs). Act as a liaison with clinical leadership during incidents and emergencies.
Training: Provide safety training to staff such as fire safety training, fire extinguisher training, MedSled training and other training as requested.
Other duties as assigned Participate on the emergency on call program and in the schedule rotation. Participates in other departmental programs as needed.
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Applied or Basic Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Environmental Science or related field. Class A, B or C valid Texas driver's license depending on the type and weight of vehicle to be operated and number of passengers to be carried and eligible to drive State and institutional vehicles.
