Houston's Health Department is seeking a talented individual to perform basic nursing responsibilities and assists with health clinics and field, hospital, home or mobile unit activities under the supervision of a Division Manager, for the Clinic Operations duties may vary as follows for this position.

 

CORE JOB DUTIES FOR LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSE

Interviews patients and records their medical history using electronic health records; verifies medical history, screens immunization records. Administers and issues medications and vaccines according to approved standing delegation orders. Administers injections and skin tests; takes blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respiration and other testing. Assists with patient follow-up; assists nurse or physician as directed. Assists in compiling statistical data for reports. Maintains inventory of supplies and medications and cleanliness of the office/clinic. May make referrals and assist with emergency response activities. Assists to ensure positive outcomes in all clinical service areas (i.e. productivity, wait time decrease). Participates in quality improvement activities including record reviews, chart audits, skills assessments, and competency evaluations.

 

ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES FOR COVID-19 Community Vaccine Outreach

  • Serves on a community-based vaccine strike team
  • Administers COVID-19 vaccines
  • Conducts registration at COVID-19 vaccines sites
  • Will need to drive to various locations throughout City of Houston
  • Must be willing to work outside normal business hours including nights and weekends
  • May be reassigned to other clinical services as needed
  • May be assigned to transport vaccines
  • Other duties as assigned

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters or record boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

Requires a high school diploma or GED certificate. Completion of a standardized program of medical education that provides training in medically assisting patients .


EXPERIENCE

Six months of related experience in a medical clinic, hospital or other health care facility are required 


CERTIFICATION / LICENSE: Medical Assistant certification is required. Completion of basic CPR certification required. Medical Assistant and CPR certification must be maintained and current for continued employment.


Must have a valid driver license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2). 

PREFERENCES

Experience with COVID-19 related activities.


Able to work untraditional hours (after 5pm) and flex-time if needed. Experience using Microsoft Excel or other software for data collection and analysis strongly preferred. Experience working in multiple data systems for data entry and generation of reports strongly preferred. Skilled in interpretation of descriptive statistics strongly preferred (e.g., mean, range). Experience explaining analysis results to lay audience preferred.
